The rising cost of fuel and food prices has given many people in the United States another reason to turn to back yard gardening. If you are someone, who has never gardened in the Tahoe basin or believes that our climate is too inhospitable for gardening, then come volunteer in one of Project MANA’s community demonstration gardens to learn techniques of gardening in high altitude. Project MANA maintains gardens near each one of our distribution sites: Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village, Truckee Regional Park in Truckee, and behind the Little Bear Cottages on Rainbow St. in Kings Beach. We use our gardens as a teaching tool to demonstrate the economic, nutritional, and personal rewards of maintaining a garden.
This June Project MANA is partnering with the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation AmeriCorps volunteers to host a Kings Beach Garden Revival throughout the month. We are looking for volunteers during the Kings Beach Community Clean-Up Day on June 7th from 9:00am to 12:00pm to help weed and prepare the garden beds for planting. The greenhouse is need of several major repairs. We need volunteers to assist in the restoration of the greenhouse on June 9th from 9:00am to 5:00pm. On June 10th and June 19th kids are invited to paint a mural from 3:30-6:00pm. We are also looking for volunteers to plant vegetables and herbs on June 14th beginning at 9:00am. To wrap up we will be having a Garden Party for all the volunteers with free food to celebrate the restoration of the Garden on June 23rd from 6:00-8:00pm.
If you would like more information about these events or would like to volunteer in one of our gardens, please contact our office at 775-298-0008. We also have Project MANA’s High Altitude Gardening Manual: A beginner’s guide to backyard gardening for sale for $10 for anyone who is interested in starting a garden of their own.

If you would like more information about these events or would like to volunteer in one of our gardens, please contact our office at 775-298-0008.
