Programs

Year Round

Emergency Relief Services, Weekly Food Distributions:

Clients are allowed to attend 12 distributions per year. Clients may also call at least 1 day ahead of distribution to request an emergency food bag, which can be received 6 times per year. A critical walk-in emergency food bag is given out at a maximum of once per year for every client, and is meant to last the client until the next distribution. If a client reaches the maximum visit limit, he or she must set up an appointment with the local Family Resource Center for an assessment.

FACE (Fresh Alternatives Create Empowerment)

A "meals on wheels" type program, provides nutrition assistance to homebound clients in our community who cannot physically attend distribution. A Project MANA volunteer delivers bags of canned goods, fresh produce, milk, and eggs. Companionship and connections to other social services are also provided.

Senior Nutrition

In cooperation with Incline Village General Improvement District and Washoe County, Project MANA is involved in understanding and supporting the nutrition needs of seniors. Please download our Senior Nutrition Questionnaire [0], fill it out, and fax to (775) 298-0009. (Download requires Free Adobe PDF Reader).

Seasonal

Nutrition Education, 2nd Grade & 0-5 year olds

Interactive classes taught in local schools to second grade and preschool aged students. Kids learn about healthy eating habits and fun food facts, as well as the importance of exercise. To learn, we read books, do activities, and play games, trying to use brains as well as muscles. At the end of class we have a healthy, easy, tasty snack as an example of what they can make at home for themselves.

Hunger Awareness Banquets

Presentations offered to schools, service groups, and the local community to increase local, national and global hunger awareness.

Kids Can Cook

Hands-on after-school cooking program for youth teaching nutrition education and kitchen safety. Offered in the fall.

Community Gardens

Project MANA's gardens are in Incline Village, Kings Beach, and Truckee. These gardens serve as demonstration gardens showing the viability of high-altitude gardening, economic benefits of growing food, and encourage community involvement. Food harvested from the gardens is given out at weekly distributions in the summer and fall.

Let's Talk Turkey-Thanksgiving Distribution

Food baskets distributed in Incline, Kings Beach and Truckee that include the entire traditional Thanksgiving meal. Served over 415 families in 2003. This is Project MANA's largest food distribution each year.

Fuel for the Holidays

Healthy lunch provided to low income children at Kings Beach Elementary during winter and spring school breaks. Our goal is to ensure the accessibility of adequate nutrition when school is not in session and federally assisted meal programs are not available.

Dar Luz

Nutrition education, smart shopping, and skill-building course tailored to meet the interests and needs of Latina women. Dar Luz is offered in the Winter and Spring.

Brown Bag Food Drive

Largest annual food drive with the help of local service organizations, restaurants, schools, sheriff and fire departments, and community volunteers. Takes place in the Fall.
In addition to families and individuals, Project MANA provides emergency food to the following facilities: Placer County Welfare-GAIN office, Tahoe Women's Services, Mt. Rose Safe House, Placer County Sheriff's Department, Washoe Co. Sheriff Sub-Station, La Communidad Unida, Headstart Truckee and Kings Beach programs, Tahoe Forest Hospital, Incline middle and high schools, Boys' and Girls' Club, Alcanse Preschool, WIC, Kings Beach Elementary, and the Truckee Recreation Center.
