We’re doing it again! Due to popular demand and a sell-out inaugural event, Project MANA is once again teaming up with KYNBO™, a local tech startup is teaming up to help fight hunger in North Lake Tahoe and Truckee through a very unique fundraiser, Pho for Project MANA. The event will take place at the Alder Creek Café located in the Tahoe Donner Alder Creek Adventure Center on June 4, 2018.
Last October, Kynbo’s Cofounder, Thao Doan, begged her mom, Mai Doan, to come out of retirement at 76 and teach a handful of lucky local chefs, including Chef David Smith of Alder Creek Café and Steve Anderson of Northstar, how to make authentic Pho soup. The Chefs spent the winter perfecting their Pho and are excited to host this labor of love community fundraiser to support Project MANA’s hunger relief efforts.
The Pho will be served to the community in a unique Pho Buffet at the Tahoe Donner Alder Creek Adventure Center as a fundraiser for Project MANA. Live entertainment will be provided by Bias & Dunn. Tickets for the community Pho dinner are $25/person and are available for purchase. All proceeds after food expenses will go to Project MANA’s hunger relief programs.
Mai Doan was the head chef at one of the first Vietnamese restaurants in California in the late 70’s called Saigon Inn. Pho is a complex and soul satisfying dish that is very difficult to master, and those who have mastered Pho’s preparation don’t usually share their hard earned knowledge. But for Project MANA, Mai provided thechefs the rare opportunity to make Pho under her watchful eye, and shared many of her cooking secrets.
Mai was reluctant about participating in the fundraiser until she learned how Project MANA, North Lake Tahoe and Truckee’s food pantry, helps hungry people in need through the distribution of food in our community, similar to the help her own family received when they emigrated from Vietnam in 1975. As Mai, her husband, and their seven children left everything behind to start a new life in America, Mai and Thao are grateful for the support of organizations such as Project MANA, and are excited for the opportunity to raise funds for Project MANA helping to keep Tahoe fed.
“The success from last year’s inaugural event had people asking when we’re doing it again,” said Julie Malkin-Manning, development director of Project MANA. “Now, back by popular demand, Thao Doan of Kynbo and I, encourage everyone to join us at the beautiful Alder Creek Adventure Center in Tahoe Donner for a fun evening of delicious pho prepared by chef David Smith bringing our community together for a great cause.”
