Food insecurity DOES exist in our community. One out of 7 locals in North Lake Tahoe and Truckee experiences food insecurity and hunger, and over 30% of them are children. Our clients – your neighbors - have many different reasons for needing food assistance: Some are seniors living on a fixed income; some have multiple jobs that don’t pay enough to cover the high cost of living in our region; some are laid off for a period of time due to the seasonality of work; and others have an abundance of medical bills and have to choose which bills WONT be getting paid this month. As Truckee/Tahoe is a resort-based location, hunger looks very different than other parts of the country, and is not often seen by the naked eye.
Last year, Project MANA distributed over 232,000 lbs. of food through our mobile weekly food distribution program, our home food delivery program, and our emergency food box program. - that’s 193,200 meals in one year to our community, feeding nearly 2,100 individuals at a cost of $2.08 per meal.
Project MANA has been serving the North Lake Tahoe and Truckee communities, working to eliminate hunger, for over 25 years through our weekly food distributions (Tahoe City, Truckee, Kings Beach and Incline) our Food and Compassion Exchange and our Emergency and Cooking Compromised Food Bags. Information on the Gleaning Opportunity from Tahoe Food Hub
We have a crop gleaning scheduled at Mt. Bounty Farm this Thursday, August 31. We will glean from 12:30 to 2:30. Mt. Bounty is located in San Juan, CA, near Nevada City and about a 1:20 drive from Truckee, so expect to leave Truckee around 11.
I'm looking for 4 to 6 volunteers ... If you think you can make it, please respond back to me at email@example.com. Let me know how many adults, how many children (and ages). Also, please provide mobile number for text communication on the day of event.
For those new to our operation, the Tahoe Gleaners works with foothill farms to salvage ripe, nutritious, organic vegetables for donation to local food pantries, first and foremost Project Mana. When a farm finds it has surplus ripe vegetables - either in the field or already harvested and packaged - but no customer to take delivery, it gets a hold of us, typically on short notice. We rally whomever we can, harvest and transport as much as we can back to Tahoe (usually Tahoe Food Hub refrigerators) and eventually on to Project Mana. For more information and background, check out our Facebook page as well as write-ups in the Sierra Sun (here and here). We typically spend 1.5 hours or so harvesting, with a maximum of 2 hours.
We (I and Tahoe Food Hub) provide all tools and gear. Volunteers need no special skills, just the right clothing and the desire to help out!
Children are welcome and encouraged to participate - it's a great family activity and learning experience - but I do ask that the adult:child ratio be 1:1, or as close as possible. Pets are not allowed.
Project MANA is so grateful to have been named as this year's non-profit beneficiary at the 32nd Annual Lake Tahoe Autumn Food & Wine Festival. We will be in the vendor village on Saturday, September 9th - come visit with us!
The 32nd annual Lake Tahoe Autumn Food and Wine Festival combines premier local cuisine, renowned chefs and live cooking demonstrations in a full-sensory dining experience, September 8-10 at Northstar California Resort. Presented by the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association and Northstar California, more than twenty culinary events showcase immersive ways to experience fine food, wine, art and the natural landscape of North Lake Tahoe.
“This is a destination culinary experience, and food is only one element. We want the flavors of premier food, wine and spirits to be enhanced by the mountain air,” Amber Burke, Events and Communications Manager at North Lake Tahoe. “The Autumn Food and Wine Festival is about the integration of flavors within the natural majesty of this high-altitude venue.”
Festival highlights include a vertical mountainside wine tasting at 7,870 feet; a progressive picnic through the Lake Tahoe National Forest; and a gondola ride to a mountain-top farm-to-table dinner.
Other notable events include the Mountain Kid’s Cook-Off Finals where teams of culinary artists, ages 8-12, compete for a champion title; the Charbay Distillery & Winery annual party and food pairing; and the Grand Tasting & Culinary Competition where top chefs battle for best marriage of food and beverage.
Notable chefs, winemakers and distillers include Chef Douglas Dale of Wolfdale’s Cuisine Unique; Northstar Executive Chef Steve Anderson; Chef Jason Gronlund, president of the non-profit Chef Relief and champion of the famed Garlic Showdown at the Gilroy Garlic Festival; Marko and Jenni Karakasevic, owners of Charbay Artisan Distillery; and Executive Chef Mark Jeffers of The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe.
“The mountain itself is a multi-course pairing experience,” said Burke. “By juxtaposing fine cuisine with diverse scenery, our guests will receive an integrated approach to high-altitude gastronomy.”
The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe hosts Art of Mixology, a Backyard Brick-Oven pizza-making class, Mountainside Stargazing Tour, family-style Harvest Dinner by Chef Jeffers and a Champagne Brunch. The Village at Northstar offers yoga and wine tastings, a Gourmet Marketplace Vendor Fair with plein air artists, a Wine and Brew Walk, Kid’s Zone activities, culinary classes and the fan-favorite Blazing Pans Mountain Chef Cook-Off.
Event proceeds benefit Project MANA, a hunger-relief non-profit that supports 3,000 individuals across three counties in Nevada and California within the North Lake Tahoe/Truckee region.

KYNBO™, a local tech startup is teaming up with Project MANA to help fight hunger in our Tahoe/Truckee community through a very special and unique fundraiser, Pho for Project MANA, at the iconic Cottonwood Restaurant on October 10th, 2017.

Kynbo’s Cofounder, Thao Doan, begged her mom, Mai Doan, a retired Vietnamese Pho Master, to come out of retirement at 76 to teach five lucky local chefs how to make authentic Pho soup. Mai Doan was the head chef at one of the first Vietnamese restaurants in California in the late 70’s called Saigon Inn. Pho is a complex and soul satisfying dish that is very difficult to master, and those who have mastered Pho’s preparation, including Mai, don’t usually share their hard earned knowledge. But for Project MANA, the chefs will be provided a rare opportunity to ask Mai about anything related to Vietnamese/ Asian cooking as Mai is willing to share her cooking secrets, even ones that have been in her family for generations!
Mai was reluctant about participating in the fundraiser until she learned how Project MANA, Tahoe/Truckee’s only local food pantry, helps hungry people in need through the distribution of food in our community, similar to the help her own family received when they emigrated from Vietnam in 1975. As Mai, her husband, and their seven children left everything behind to start a new life in America, Mai and Thao are grateful for the support of organizations such as Project MANA, and are excited for the opportunity to raise funds for Project MANA helping to keep Tahoe fed.
The selected chefs, which include Dave Smith (Cottonwood Restaurant), Steve Anderson (Executive Chef Northstar California), Jason Lee (Margs Taco Bistro), Carolyn Newman (resident Chef at Tahoe Food Hub and formerly with Manzanita), Priya Hutner (The Seasoned Sage), will join Mai in Cottonwood’s kitchen the morning of October 10th to prepare and start cooking the Pho beef broth, which can take up to 8 hours to perfect.
They will also make a traditional Vietnamese chicken salad, Goi Ga, with locally sourced produce from the Tahoe Food Hub. The Pho and Goi Ga will be served to the community for dinner at Cottonwood as a fundraiser for Project MANA.
Chefs and their helpers will return to Cottonwood that afternoon to prep for community dinner service, which begins at 6:30pm (doors at 6pm). Tickets for the community dinner are $40 /person and are available here.
All proceeds after food expenses will go to Project MANA to help Keep Tahoe Fed.
